Turrican was coded by Manfred Trenz and sure is one of the best if not the best plattformer on the C64. Some ideas are borrowed from Metroid but Turrican is way better. The levelsize and the really smooth scrolling in all directions was revolutionary in 1990.

Besides the original version on the C64 I also wrote something for Super Turrican on the NES. This game is not that widely know but very interesting indeed. Check it out too. Also you can find the levelmaps for Turrican II: The Final Fight on my page here.
There are a lot of fangames about Turrican, for example T2002 and Hurrican.

@Jochen:
jupp, Turrican II ist auch noch in Planung, aber zur Zeit ist ja T1 noch nichtmal komplett da. Setzt dir lieber noch n paar Kannen Kaffee auf ;)
Wenn du selber was machen möchstes veröffentliche ich das natürlich auch gerne =)
