Metal Gear Solid 2

Boxes

Well then, this chapter covers the cardboard boxes you can find in the different Levels of Metal Gear Solid 2. They look different and in the Big Shell Level the Boxes have a special use, but more on that later on, when the time has come. And this chapter is not all that long, you will find out in no time...

Before I just list all the boxes here I want to give you a good hint for a special use for the boxes: When you are engaged in a gunfight with soldiers and then want to escape, equip a box.
For one you are now smaller and harder to hit and furthermore if you get hit you won't stop for a moment but can just continue running. And if you suddently turn into a cardboard box while you are in a gunfight the soldiers watching this get confused for a moment which you can use to your advantage.
The boxes are also very useful to quickly switch from one side to the other when fighting Olga Gurlukovich and crawling is too slow for you or when you want to quickly pass some guards and there is a hip high cover.

And now let's see some info about the different boxes, first Level first, so here are all the facts about the

Boxes in the Tanker Level

Box 1 - Tanker - Box 2 / Wet Box - Tanker

Box 1

Location:
In the Storageroom (NE) on Deck D.

Look:
A grey with a bit fawn colored box with the words THE ORANGE on it.

Things of interest:
If you approach this box the soldier that likes to take a nap comes along and blocks your way out.
So you have to fight him or wait until he falls asleep again.

Box 2/WET BOX

Location:
On the Navigational Deck wing in the east. You can get there only after the fight with Olga Gurlukovich.

Look:
Just like the Box 1, a grey with a bit fawn colored box with the words THE ORANGE on it, but this box is wet and worn out.

Things of interest:
Don't use the wet box to hide somewhere inside (and basically 92.4% of the Tanker Level is inside) or you will get spotted immediately.
When a soldier shoots the box while you hide inside you will get uncamouflaged as it also happens when other boxes get shot, but this box also gets torn apart and then is of no use anymore and you can't pick it up any more.

Boxes in the Big Shell Level

The boxes in this level are not only for camouflage but they can also be used for transport. To use the box transport you have to be in Strut E. There is the main post office that sends the post over the whole oil platform. And depending on which box you have equipped you get shipped to that part of the Shell 1.
To get things going you position yourself on the small platform with the 3 red lights next to the conveyor belt in the southwest of the post office room of the Strut E. When the lights turn yellow the belt is about to stop and when they are blue you can step on the conveyor belt.
You have to have a box equipped for this to work. The box you have equipped determines where you get transported to.

Box 1 - Big Shell - Box 2 - Big Shell - Box 3 - Big Shell - Box 4 - Big Shell - Box 5 - Big Shell

Box 1

Location:
In the part with the bomb and all these pipes on Strut A - Pump Room. To reach the box you have to get to the southwest of the room with the pipes and get over the stairs. But don't crawl under the one single pipe, but right after the stairs to the east below the 2 pipes. From there get to the south and climb over the small box and you are there.

Look:
A grey with a bit fawn colored box with the words THE ORANGE on it.

Things of interest:
Takes you to the Strut C - Dining Hall, To the place with the 3 boxes to the left of the tables.

Box 2

Location:
In the basement of the Strut F - Warehouse behind the LVL 1 door in the southwest. In the room with the node.

Look:
A lightbrown box with PDF-21 written on it.

Things of interest:
When equipped on the converyor belt in Strut E this box takes you to the other boxes in front of the lockers in the northeast of Strut B.

Box 3

Location:
On the roof of Strut E, the heliport, you can find the Box number 3.

Look:
A greyblue box with a grafittilike writing on it that looks like Gabriud or even freaky.

Things of interest:
When you want to get back to Strut A then you have to use this box on the parcel conveyor belt in Strut E. You are taken to the foot of the stairs coming from the roof in the west of Strut A.

Box 4

Location:
On Level B2 in the Shell 1 Core. This box is right next to the Node in the Computerroom. The small seperate little room.

Look:
A khakicolored box with the words McFarlane Toys written on it and a spades like symbol. Btw, McFarlane Toys produces Metal Gear Solid Action Figures...

Things of interest:
This box spares you some climbing, it takes you directly to the Strut F. You appear in the basement level in the southeast next to the M9 ammunition on the boxes.

Box 5

Location:
In the Strut E - Parcel Room on ground level, well, the level you enter this strut. Not in the basement, not higher, in the northeast on the parcel distribution machine. And it takes you back there too.

Look:
An olive colored box with the letters Z.O.E. written on it.
This is a reference to the game Zone of the Enders (also by Konami) that had the Metal Gear Solid 2 Demo included in its package.

Things of interest:
Are you up for a roundtrip? This box takes you on a ride through Strut E and also stops in the locked room you can normally only access with the LVL5 card. This allows you to grab the Camera early on and then ride back to the Strut E or, when using another box, somewhere else.
The eye on the box makes the doves nervous and thus you can scare them away with the box.
