Walkthrough

Main Menu

Here you can select options using the icon that looks like a footballer's foot and works a lot like a mouse cursor.
The Main Menu options are detailed in the manual as thus:

The Main Menu consists of icon driven options which allow you to select and change all pre-play options. These options appear on screen in the following layout:

Main Menu Layout
Wind Speed
Weather
Time per half
Radar location
Extra time
Curved shots
Referee
Game Type
No. Of players
Start match

Wind Speed
For Demo, Practice and Single game options you can pre-select the wind speed by pointing the foot at this icon and pressing button 1 to cycle through the four possible speeds.
In Tournament mode the computer will randomly select the wind speed.

Weather
For Demo, Practice and Single game options you can pre-select the weather by pointing the foot at this icon and pressing button 1 to select either wet or dry conditions. In Tournament mode the computer will randomly select wet or dry weather.

Time
For all game modes including Tournament you can pre-select the length of game. The length of time for each half game is indicated on screen and this number should be doubled to calculate the time for a full match. There are four options: 3, 5, 8 or 10 minutes.

Radar
The radar acts as a mini map of the entire pitch indicating the positions of all players from both teams. The game player's team is indicated in white. The opposition's team is indicated in black. The player currently in posession of the ball is indicated by the team colour of the game player's team.
For all game modes you can pre-select the position of the radar to remain in one of the four corners of the large pitch. Alternatively the radar can be switched off if you decide it is not an option you wish to use.

Extra Time
For all game modes you can pre-select to have extra time or not. If you choose to have extra time and a draw still occurs at the end of the match a sudden death penalty (shoot out) will be automatic. If you choose not to select extra time and a draw occurs the match will end at a draw.

Curved Shots
For all game modes you can pre-select curved or straight shots. Known in the football world as "after touch" the way a ball is kicked can change the curve at the end of the shot. This can be particularly useful for taking corner kicks.

Referee
For Demo, Practice and Single game modes you can select the referee for each match. In CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE there are eight different referees, some very strict and others very lenient. Only through experience will you learn each referee's characteristics. In Tournament mode the Master System will randomly select the referee for you.
The referee will also give information like time left to play and current score in addition to instructions like play on, throw in and tell you when a foul has occurred.

Game Type
You can select from four different types of game: Demo; Practice; Single Game; Tournament. These will be fully explained in the Game modes section.

Number of players
CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE is a 1 or 2 player game. You can select to play against the Master System or against a friend in either Single game or Tournament mode.

Play the game
Once you have made all of your pre-play selections, point to the 'Play the game' icon and you will automatically begin in the mode you selected.

For the referees the eight referees that you can pick are:
  • E. Hickman
  • F. Simon
  • K. Mangum
  • D. Michek
  • P. Freeman
  • J. Xiong
  • N. Hemming
Looking at the credits in the manual it seems these are the names of the people involved in making the game:

Development credits
Champions of Europe: UEFA '92, Tecmagik's first original game, was designed and programmed by: Ed Hickman, Simon Freeman, Jean Xiong and Karen Mangum at Teckmagik Inc, Belmont, California.
In addition Nikki Hemming wrote the manual (and I think she did all the PR at Tecmagik back then).
As for the referee's individual attributes, info on that can be found in the Hints and Tips section.
