Menus

All the menus in this game are picture-based rather than word-based. This makes it quite hard to navigate through them, especially without a manual. It also makes this game very hard to write a FAQ for too. Luckily I rose to the challenge (pain-staking as it was) so that now, with this guide, you will have no problems navigating and understanding the multiple menus and thus playing this game to the maximum.



Language Menu


  • British flag (for English)

Main Menu

Main Menu After choosing your language you are taken to the main menu. You have the following options:
  • A picture of Striker, the official mascot of USA 94 (he's the dog), zipping through some cones. This takes you to the Practice Mode Menu.
  • Striker lifting the World Cup aloft. This takes you to the World Cup Mode.
  • Striker holding a notepad in front of him, and a pen behind him. This takes you to the Customized World Cup Mode.
  • Striker holding the World Cup aloft with three big question marks in front of him. This is where you enter in your passwords to resume a world cup tournament from where you left it. Some passwords are given in the Passwords section if you want to skip parts of the World Cup.

Below are the other menus explained, or if you wish you can skip straight through to the Game Modes and get playing.


Practice Mode Menu

Practice Mode Menu This menu has 7 options, all of which are, again, pictures of Striker the dog:
  • Striker standing in front of a D-pad and a number 1 whilst beside him are two question marks. This takes you to the Player's Team Options Menu for practice mode.
  • Striker with two questions marks beside him and a football pitch in front of him. This is the Options Menu.
  • Striker with two question marks beside him and a computer chip ahead of him. This is the Computer's Team Options Menu.
  • Striker with a football pitch and cone ahead of him. This takes you into a Practice Mode match.
  • Striker doing keepy-uppies in front of a cone. This takes you to the set-piece Practice Mode.
  • Striker with a penalty area and a cone ahead of him. This is the penalty shootout Practice Mode.
  • Striker giving the thumbs up and covered by a big-tick. Click this to exit back to the Main Menu.


Team Options Menu

Team Options Menu The team option menus give you the following 7 options:
  • Striker playing football in front of a goal net with a computer chip (sorry if that is not the correct term but, if not, get used to it because I've used it throughout this guide) in front of him. This is the keeper control option. Click this to change the goalkeeper to manual control if you want (indicated by the D-Pad). When the goalie is computer controlled you only have control for goal kicks and throw-outs and when facing penalties.
  • Striker resting his foot on a stationary ball. This is the ball trap option. With it on your players will trap the ball when they receive a pass and be able to therefore turn straight away. With it off the players are unable to stop with the ball etc. So I suggest you have it on.
  • Striker with his foot attached to the ball with some glue. This is the dribble factor option. Here you can set how much control you want of the ball when you dribble. With the glue on strikers foot stretched out then this will mean that when you dribble you'll tap the ball ahead of you. With the ball tight to Striker's foot when you dribble the ball will be tight to your player. Choose your personal preference which probably depends on the other soccer games you are used to playing. Otherwise choose the tighter option as this is easier.
  • Striker holding a notepad as he stands behind a tactics pitch. This takes you to the Formation Editor Menu.
  • Striker holding a notepad as he stands behind some stick men. This takes you into the team editor area. Go in here to change the personnel within your team. The 16 names in red are within your squad whilst the remaining 6 names in black are not. When a player in red is highlighted then a circle will appear underneath one of the players on the right (either a player on the pitch or one of the ones on the 5-mn substitute bench). Also here you can see each player's attributes because each player has three bars next to their name, and also down below the pitch when they are highlighted. These bars show the players abilities. The higher the bars the better the player. The blue bar is the tackling one, the red bar is the speed one, and the green bar is the skill one. Once you've sorted your team out click the button with Striker and the tick on to exit back to the team options menu.
  • Striker standing behind a D-Pad. You can click this to either let you control the game (the D-Pad symbol) or let the computer take control of the match for you (the computer chip icon), i.e. the match will be simulated for you. This is useful for the easier games earlier in the tournament if you just want to skip ahead to the more interesting stages. However remember you still could lose, even if the team you are playing are weaker, so it is advisable to take a note of the password before doing this approach.
  • Striker giving the thumbs up and covered by a big-tick. Click this to exit once done.

Formation Editor Menu


Formation Editor Menu This game lets you amend your formation in quite some detail. Not that you need to do it. This menu is to the left of a pitch which is split into nine sectors so that you can see how your formation changes with the flow of play. There are eight selectable options:
  • Striker making an AOK sign with his fingers. Click this to exit this menu when you have perfected your formation.
  • A ball with four arrows pointing outwards from it. Click this then move the ball on the pitch so that you can see how your formation works when the ball is in a different one of the nine sections of the pitch.
  • Player with arrow next to him. This option allows you to select a specific player. Once selected you can move him by pressing down and holding button 1 and moving him before releasing 1 again when you are happy with his position. Now when you play he will be in that position when the ball is in the sector of the pitch that it was in when you moved the player.
  • Player with arrow next to him pointing the other way. Similarly this also lets you select the player and move the player in the same way as above.
  • The pitch with the centre circle highlighted. This option lets you toggle between setting your formation for when the ball is in normal play (the centre circle highlighted in grey) or for when you are facing set-pieces (when the centre circle is in red).
  • The pitch with the arrow in the middle of it. This option lets you toggle between setting your formation in an attacking situation (the arrow pointing up the pitch) or in a defensive position (the ball pointing down the pitch).
  • The arrow pointing from the computer chips to the pitch. This allows you to load up some of the pre-set formations. There are eight here to choose. In order these are:
  • The player running along a red arrow. This is the player modifier option. "You can fine tune the movement of individual players in direct relation to the ball within each highlighted field sector." Press 1 to select one of the four settings to determine how far your players position themselves to the ball (so nearer = nearer, and further = further).

Options Menu

Options Menu The options menu gives you the following options:
  • Striker passing the ball backwards. This is where you can turn on/off the back-pass rule. With this on the goalie can't pick up a back-pass, so they have to kick it. If you prefer that you can back-pass to the keeper so that they can pick it up then turn this rule off.
  • Striker waving a flag. This is where you can turn off/on the offside rule. A player is offside if he is beyond the last defender when the pass is played to him. You can turn this off if you wish, but obviously your opponent will also benefit from the rule change.
  • Striker being blown in the wind. This is the weather option. When the weather option is on then wind will affect the game to varying degrees. The playing conditions are randomly selected for each match, so you have no control over the weather - as in real life. With it off there are no weather impacts to affect the game.
  • Striker standing by a rectangle with an arrow up it. This is the game speed option. Select the pace of the game: slow, normal or fast.
  • Striker holding a stop-watch. This is the match duration option. Each match consists of two halves. Choose here the length of a half: 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minutes or 45 minutes. Best to choose the shortest option otherwise you could be playing the game for a long time.
  • Striker with his thumb up and a tick in front of him. Use this to exit this menu once all your options are set to your satisfaction.

Pre-match Menu

Pre-Match Menu with 5 Options Prior to a world cup match you see the pre-match menu with five to six options on it:
  • The two top options showing Striker standing either behind a computer chip or a D-Pad depending on whether the team is computer-controlled or user-controlled. Clicking one of these will take you to the Team Options Menu. The one on the left is for the team listed on the left, and the one on the right is for the team listed on the right.
  • Striker with a couple of question marks beside his head as he stands behind a football pitch. This takes you to the Team Options Menu.
  • Striker standing behind a ball. Click this to go to the match. If it is a CPU vs CPU game you will watch them play. At half-time and full-time you will need to move things along though by clicking to proceed.
  • Pre-Match Menu with 6 Options
  • Striker giving the thumbs up with a tick in front of him. This only shows when there is not a user-controlled team present and takes you straight to the result rather than you having to watch the teams play against each other.
  • Striker standing behind a grid with his thumbs up. This takes you into the league tables of the group for which the match is relevant, or so you can see the knockout games in the round you are in if you are past the group stage. The league table will show you the positions of the teams in the group, the games played, games won, drawn and lost, goals for and against, and points gained. You can also select to see all the other groups/knockout stages if you wish from here by selecting the option you get with the arrow when you enter here.

Post-match menu

Post-Match Menu After a world cup match you'll be shown the match stats with four selectable options below:
  • Striker holding the world cup aloft with three question marks ahead of him. This is the see password option. Click it to view the password that will enable you to resume your tournament later from the exact same point. You can input the password at the Main Menu.
  • Striker giving the thumbs up with a tick in front of him. Click this to continue to the next match of the tournament.
  • Striker giving the thumbs up with an arrow in front of him. Click this to skip ahead in the tournament straight through to the next match involving a user-controlled team, or the final if only computer-controlled teams are left.
  • Striker standing behind a grid with his thumbs up. This takes you into the league tables of the group for which the match is relevant, or so you can see the knockout games in the round you are in if you are past the group stage. The league table will show you the positions of the teams in the group, the games played, games won, drawn and lost, goals for and against, and points gained. You can also select to see all the other groups/knockout stages if you wish from here by selecting the option with the arrow.

Pause Menu

Pause Menu During a game you can click the start button to pause the game and bring up the pause menu. There are four options here:
  • Striker pointing to his hand. This takes you in to see the full set of options available here if you click 1 on it, or if you click start again then you go back to the match.
  • Striker standing behind a pitch. By selecting this you can cycle through all the available formations. In order these are:
  • Striker standing behind a red and yellow arrow. Select this to make a substitution. You have two available substitutions per match, and can only make one at a time. If a player gets injured (indicated by a pop-up of the physio coming onto the pitch) then it will automatically prompt you to make a substitution.
  • Striker standing with the ball and a grey cross in front of him. Choose this to quit the match and go back to the Pre-match Menu. There is therefore no penalty for quitting a game as you can simply restart it.
