Menus

Main Menu

Upon starting the game you see the main menu. Here are the options:
  • Options (see Options Menu)
  • Friendly - choose this to play a friendly match (see Friendly Menu)
  • Cup - choose this to play a custom cup competition (see Cup Menu)
  • League - choose this to play a custom league (see League Menu)
  • Specials - choose this to play some preset leagues and cups (see Specials Menu)

Options Menu

There are 5 adjustable options here:
  • Game Length (3/5/7 min)
  • Menu Music (on/off)
  • Pad Buttons (Two/One)
  • Team Class (Clubs/Inter)
  • Difficulty (U 18/Pro)

These are self-explanatory really. The Team Class means you either play with club teams or international teams and affects the cups and leagues that you can play in (e.g. club teams won't take part in the world cup qualifying).

For the difficulty level Pro is the harder one, U 18 (under 18) is the easier one.

Friendly Menu

So you want to play a friendly match, maybe against a friend or maybe against the computer. Once you've clicked on friendly you have the following options:

The pitch type option will affect the way the ball moves and bounces, but not too much. It also changes the colour of the pitch sometimes too (like the icy one is blue).

In a friendly there is no extra time or penalties.

Cup Menu

Choosing to play a cup will bring you to a menu where you can customise a cup to your preferred set-up. Note that there is no save option so you'll need to do it in one sitting.

The options are:
  • Away goals - N/A unless legs = 2, in which case you can have away goals yes or no. Away goals yes means that should the teams be tied after two legs of the tie then the team that scored the most away goals goes through. If that is also a tie then the extra-time and penalty options you've chosen will come into play.
  • Pitch type - normal/dry/hard/random/icy/muddy/wet/soft
  • Rounds - Here you choose the number of rounds from 1 to 6.
  • Legs - you can have your ties as one-legged affairs or with two legs (so each team plays home and away and the combined score over the two matches is taken into account to determine the winner)
  • Extra - you can choose here whether you want extra time or not when there is a drawn match (no/yes/rep (rep = replay))
  • Pens. - you can choose here whether you want penalty kicks to decide the winner in the event of a draw (no/yes/rep (rep = replay)). If you choose replays then you'll keep playing replays until one team actually wins the match in normal time (or extra time if you have that option without pens).
  • Choose teams - to choose your teams (see the teams available to choose from in the Teams section) - when selecting the teams the ones highlighted in red with the C are computer-controlled and the ones highlighted in blue marked with the P are player-controlled

For each of the legs/extra/pens options you can choose differently for the final and semi-final if you wish, as opposed to the normal rounds.

Note when you choose the play match option you will cycle through all the computer v computer matches too (these will not actually play out in full; instead you'll be presented with the final score after you have chosen to play them).

Now to win the cup you need to win through all the knock-out rounds to get through to the final and win that too. Congrats.

League Menu

League: Choosing to play a league will bring you to a menu where you can customise the league to your preferred set-up. Note before you start setting up your 20 team league that there is no save option so you'll need to do everything in one sitting.

The options are:

Note when you choose the play match option you will cycle through all the computer v computer matches too (these will not actually play out in full; instead you'll be presented with the final score after you have chosen to play them).

Also note that for a draw you'll get 1 point and for a loss you'll get 0 points. So to win the cup you need to have the most points after all the matches have been played.

Specials Menu

Here are the special tournaments that you can play. These are already set-up cups and leagues.

For the club teams you have:
  • Euro Super League
  • Cup Winners Cup
  • EUFA Cup
  • European Cup

And for the international teams you have:
  • World Cup Qual Gp1 - Gp6
  • Euro-Cup
  • League of Nations
  • Euro Championships

Note: Go to the Options Menu to switch between playing as international or club teams if the special tournament you want to play is not showing.

Various teams take part in these (and you can't swap teams in that are not already in). To see which team is in which special tournament see the Teams section.

Now to explain what each of these tournaments are: Euro Super League
This is a 20-team league with 2-points awarded for a win. You play each team twice (38 games in total for each team).

Cup Winners Cup
32 club teams take part in this. There are two legs in each round except the final with away goals coming into play, followed by a replay with extra time and pens if still a draw.

The final is a one-off affair (so no two legs) with extra time and penalty kicks if necessary.

EUFA Cup
All 64 club teams take part in this. There are two legs in each round with away goals, extra time and pens coming into play if there is a draw. This is also the case in the final too.

European Cup
32 club teams take part in this. There are two legs in each round except the final with away goals coming into play, followed by a replay with extra time and pens if still a draw.

The final is a one-off affair (so no two legs) with extra time and penalty kicks if necessary.

World Cup Qual Gp
There are 6 qualifying groups here to choose from containing either 5 or 6 teams. You play each team twice (home and away) and the two teams with the most points at the end qualify for the World Cup (although you don't actually get to play in the World Cup unfortunately).

It is 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss.

Euro-Cup
This is a 32-team knockout cup competition.

In the event of a tie the game goes to extra time. In the event of this still yielding no winner then there is a replay.

The winner is the team left standing after all 5 rounds.

League of Nations
A 16-team league with 2 points for a win and playing each other only once. The team with the most points at the end wins the league.

Euro Championships
Like the 1992 European Championships there are two groups of 4 teams that play each other once gaining 2 points for a win. After that the top two teams go through to the knock-out stages with the winner of the group playing the runner-up of the other group. The winners of the semis then play each other in the final, and the winner of that wins the competition. Knockout matches that end in draws go to extra time and penalties if needed.

Pre-match menu

When you start the match you are taken to a pre-match menu. There are two options at the top: view and play. Below that is your team line-up and the available formations you can have.

If you choose view then you switch between teams so you can see the likely opposition's formation and starting lineup (like where his star players are).

If you choose play then you go into the change kit colours menu before starting the match.

For the formations you can have:
  • 442
  • 541
  • 451
  • 532
  • 352
  • 433
  • ATT (a 334 formation)
  • DEF (a 631 formation)
If you click on a player then you can choose a replacement from the squad. Note that there are some players with stars next to them. These are your star players so keep them in the starting line-up if you want to have the best opportunity to win. Other than those stars there is no indication of the players' respective abilities, although this doesn't mean that they are all the same quality of player as they are not.

Note that once the match actually starts then you can't change your players or formation as there are no substitutions.

Lastly look at those players names. They are based on the real players from around 92-93 but because Sensible Software didn't have the official licences for them they have been slightly changed. See if you can spot who they are meant to be.

Change kit colours menu

Just before you start the match you have the chance to change the kits of the two teams. To change them choose the direction for the team you want to change then click on the options of shirt1 (the main colour of the shirt), shirt2 (the other colour of the shirt) and shorts.

Then click play to go to the match or undo to go back to how the kits were before you started messing with them.
