The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Review by LinearScaffold

"One of the best games of all time."

I read in a magazine in my home country of Ukraine, after the Orange Revolution, about a game called The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. So, I asked the guy who owns the store on the corner if he could give me information. His eyes were shifty and I got a bit suspicious, but things turned out to be fine eventually. I came back the next day, and he gave me my copy of this game! It came in a logo-less gray cardboard box with an address scratched out. When I got home I opened the logo-less box and took out the cart. It wouldn't run on my system, so I had to get a new one that was grey and square, and game with a special controller with a pad and 2 red buttons.

What makes The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion such a great game? The simplicity! Being struck by games like Frequency, Heroes of the Lance, NARC, Mortal Kombat II, God of War, Vandread Story, Dr. Mario, Mega Man 3, Beatmania IIDX 10th Style, and other complex messes of "gameplay" we have The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Graphics:

The graphics are great! You have a black screen and combinations of four square blocks come down. Every time you get 10 lines, the blocks change color as the level goes up. I was expecting more detail on a game that just came out, but the simplistic colors and polygons were just as enjoyable as anything else.

Sound:

Some of the catchiest music I've ever heard! The complex arrangements in this game rival those of Final Fantasy Tactics and Duck Hunt. I personally like Type A. Also, the sound effects are great. CLANG. CLANG. BEEEEEEEEP. There are only three songs, but you have the ability to change them at your will. That makes The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion get super extra bonus points from me!

Control:

Easy! The game is so comfortable. You use left and right to move the blocks left, and press A or B to rotate in the corresponding direction. My grandma could pick up this game! The corners of the controller sometimes hurt my hand, and my thumb has blisters from moving left and right so much.

Gameplay:

The gameplay of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is simple! As blocks fall, you can control them, rotate them, and attempt to make horizontal lines. As you make one, the line goes away. When you make 10 lines, the blocks fall faster and the music speeds up too. The goal is to not have the blocks reach the top, so you have to think fast and make lines!

Overall:

This game is great. It reminded me of a certain game I played a long time ago, but I can't put my finger on what it is. Either way, it was a fresh wave of nostalgia and provided me with hundreds of hours of fun! Nintendo, as they've done with many other games in the past, has crafted a classic, a "meisterwerk" so to speak, and this game will entertain future generations for many years.
