SMS Completion Project Part 1

Due to the amount of discussion and general agreement by about half the users on this board, this topic will mark the restart of the SMS Completion Project. Hopefully, this project will offer the users that wish to contribute to a Completion Project without FAQing Japan games something to contribute to.

Here is the website for this Completion Project: http://glacoras.net16.net/SMS_CP/

Only real change between this project and the NES project is that users can only claim a games for an entire year. Once the year is up, they will have to re-claim it. This is because claims that are 4 years old will most likely never be filled by the user claiming it.

I would like to ask anyone that does not mind FAQing Japan games to check out the NES Completion Project - http://faqs.retronintendo.com/ - as there are still alot of games that need to be finished there as well.

Thanks to Brian, vinheim, jelly soup, llamaman2, DEngel, Joni, stahlbaum, ACowWithaDS, Eternal_Debate and anyone else I missed for the input that led to the creation of this project. Big up for Games, who has put more time in than any of us! Hopefully we can enjoy as much success as the NES project has.

If we are doing the draw-claim-thing then I'm going to put my name down for James Pond 2: Robocod.

Good luck everyone!

As some other users has responded to this topic (and TD took the game I was expecting him to take), I will claim Spiderman: Return of the Sinister Six. I have already completed the Game Gear version and this one looks identical to it from where I have managed to get up to.

I was gonna pick Battletoads in Battlemaniacs, but couldn't find the game, so I'll take Sonic Blast.

Put me down for R.C. Grand Prix, was a game I had half written in the old project before losing interest in writing, should be able to get that out even without access to an working copy of the game, know it fairly well and got most of the critical stuff for it already.

So many good games left, looking through the list. I'd expect a decent dent made in the list pretty quickly.

BTW, I'd prefer Ringworm if you list who contributed what on the site - the name of my old account and current contributor name. Thanks.

What's this?

Winter Olympics: Lillehammer '94 Another System

You really think there should be another guide just for the SMS?! The games are the same and I had to pick one or the other to submit.

Oops, scrap that, I see that it is already cross-linked.
Games | Posted 10/13/2009 3:34:38 PM | message detail
odino, I only listed it as it was a different system. There are probably a couple of games that were written for the SMS/GG version and is just selected as GG on that list. I just put it up encase I had someone say "Wait, that list should include XYZ".

I honestly think that half the incomplete games have a FAQ that is the same as your guide, but decided to add them encase someone pointed out that they did not have a SMS version to the game.

If more people want me to go through the list of "Another System" games to remove the games with GameGear versions of the game, I will. However, I will ONLY do that for the GameGear guides and because of this board deciding to remove them.

I'll note this here as it confused me at first:

The dates listed on the Incomplete Games list are formatted day/month/year. Might want to note that somewhere on the site.

Updated the site. I'm playing around with the color scheme to make updates to large sections (like the "S" section) of the table easier. Please look at the "Complete list" if you think the color should be changed to the normal Green/Grey mix or if the Orange section titles look better.

hey guys.
I like what you have put together so far. I'm coding/learning php for fun and would like to code and design the page.
I'm thinking about a cool system where user can sign up to the site, log in and add their claims by themselves (this can easily be limited to say 3 claims per user at once) and an admin system where the admins can easily add new claims for people that only post in the topic and don't want to sign up to the site. It should be easy to add newly added games. I'm also thinking about a database for all the games and a dynamic output of this. The dynamic output can also calculate the stats, move the completed guides to the completed list after an admin changes the status of the game(guide) and lots of other fun stuff =)
Of course it will take some time to code this whole thing up and I have limited internet access this month (and maybe some more at the beginning of next month) but I'm definitively interested in this. Seems like a good thing to do in the forthcoming winter evenings besides guidewriting and drinking tea ;)

I could never figure out how to get a SMS emulator to work so I can't test it out, but I bet a good amount of those games are the same as the versions for other consoles like NES.

Games | Posted 10/14/2009 11:32:46 PM | message detail
selmaik, I do not know what the other people think, but I think it would be a good idea for a large CP (or even several CPs molded together) with a large userbase working on them. For a 188 guide project (maybe less, if people do not think it is worth the time/effort to FAQ for games that are "Another System" covered), with about 10 users, I doubt it would be worth it. Maybe after the NES/SMS Projects are completed, we could implement it with a few CPs running at the same time.

If you want to create the site and run it for the SMS, I would easily sign up to it. Would the Complete/Incomplete list be automatically changed, or changed by the Admin? Also, could the site be split into several consoles to have a central theme for each CP that this board would like to see (such as SNES, Genesis, GB, GBA, GBC, etc)?

Da Hui, I wouldn't be too surprised if most games are the same. I know there are some GameGear games that are IDENTICAL to their SMS counterparts, but also know that some of them are entirely different games with the same name. It depends on what people consider "complete" as. I consider a game "complete" when there is a guide for that specific version (due to problems with guides that were made for another system and knowledge of GameFAQ's recommendation linkage system to be severly flawed).

@Da Hui: Try kega fusion, works good for me =)

@ games: everything is possible. The problem is to get it running bugfree ;)
As I'm no professional php coder it's a good practice for me to do this for a for a small project. And once the framework is up and working it can also work with another database for another system =)
But as I already wrote don't expect anything all too soon. In about a month I can start with it. If this topic is still around by then I will definitely start on it once I have a stable internet connection.
In my mind/rough plan there will be an option for an admin account to change the status of a game from incomplete to complete in the database and on the frontend site the game will then be shown on the completed list with all the stuff (e.g. author, date of completion and everything else that could be useful) and not be shown on the incomplete list anymore. As all this can work with only one database for all the games the stats can be calculated from this too.

Actually, i might not need to FAQ it. From what I can see, the only difference between the SMS version of Asterix and the Great Rescue and the Genesis version is the graphics and sound. Since there is already a detailed FAQ for the Genesis version (which is the version I own), it might be best to just link it over.

I looked up some playthroughs on Youtube of both games to see what is different. In all honestly, the only real difference that I can see is that the Genesis version looks and sounds better.

Looks like you have the first and second guide done Alex! Keep up the good work. As for me, you can expect James Pond 2 sometime around the end of the week.
Eternal_Debate | Posted 10/15/2009 6:36:15 AM | message detail
Good job on the work so far, expect my first guide early next week, depending on motivation levels over the weekend. Could possibly be earlier, but doubt it.

Just noticed the header is a bit wrong on the completed guides page, lists them as incomplete guides. Also, if you could have the name listed on the site the same as my contributor name (Ringworm) it would be better.

Liking the site as is now, not sure it needs to be more automated for a project this size, but I can see how it would help out.

Kega Fusion is the emulator I use as well, haven't had any issues with it working. I'd recommend it to anybody who is looking for an emulator that should work.

^ I dunno. I know me and TD have also requested that this topic is Stickied. Maybe the moderator responcible for this sticky request decided that the NEX CP should be the only CP on this board. Either way, I will attempt to keep this topic on the first page for as long as possible.

Guide update: Only need to describe how to get through the first part of the 4th level to complete my guide. Will hopefully get that done after my interview and before the time the FAQ list gets cleared tonight.

Guide is now finished. I have uploaded it now. I have also become bored enough to claculate that it would take us 62 weeks to complete this project if we did 3 guides every week.
