SMS Completion Project Part 2

#351 | edwithgames | Posted 9/19/2011 6:16:56 PM | message detail | quote
I've recently updated my Rastan FAQ which was on the site before MikePenance's. I'm very pleased with the end result as it now includes a complete walkthrough. My Captain Silver one has had a major overhaul too and is now much more streamlined and with a better walkthrough too.

My Populous guide has just had a week and a half spent on it and I'm proud to say I think it's my best yet. Everything I know about the game is in there and hopefully it should be accepted soon.

My next projects will be Forgotten Worlds, Cloud Master (the one already on the site contains a few mistakes about the game) and Shadow of the Beast whose only guide is quite short.

I'm not trying to claim anything as I don't mind others putting guides up for the ones I've already done or am currently doing. These guides are something I want to do and I hope GameFAQs accepts them.

My Populous FAQ is now online. I'm guessing it still says FAQ and not FAQ walkthrough because it was an update to the original one which was just an FAQ.

Nice to see someone new on board. This has died down a bit lately, but it is still by far the easiest of the current CP's to complete, any help is appreciated.

I'll hopefully get back into writing for this some time before the end of the year, if I get time. There are some good games to come out still this year, which I can see eating up all my spare time, however with the games shops in my area, it's unlikely I'd be able to get them anyway - the shops are useless, and never have what you want in stock.

hi edwithgames.
Feel free to sign up to the site for the project mentioned in the first post of this topic and claim forgotten Worlds and get the credit for the guide before someone else is faster than you and could have written for another game in the mean time.

I haven't done something for Bubble Bobble since early this year, but I'm still planning to complete the guide some time in the future!

Hi selmiak

I've signed up on that site and have "claimed" Forgotten Worlds. At the moment, I'm half way through my Cloud Master one and will start Forgotten Worlds shortly after.

The completion project doesn't stop others doing a guide to games though. The more guides the games have, the better in my opinion. Different authors have different styles of writing guides and the variety can only be a good thing.
#357 | selmiak | Posted 9/23/2011 9:07:01 PM | message detail | quote
you sure are right, noone is stopping anyone from writing for a game that is already covered, but the main goal of this project is to write a complete guide for all SMS games that don't have a complete guide yet. That's why the first person to have a complete guide up for a game gets the credit on the Completion Project.

Right, that's my Cloud Master one completed. Once I've proof-read it and taken out the typographical errors and mistakes, I'll upload it. Forgotten Worlds next!

I dunno. I do other stuff now but maybe I'll find time to write one or two SMS guides. I had a look down the list but nothing is jumping out at me.

Been looking into Megumi Rescue and am trying to figure out how I should write this guide.

Originally, I was going to write the guide like I did for my Rescue Mission guide. This was to write a guide that covered the basics of the game and explained how to progress through it with as much ease as possible.

However, as I played the game for a bit, I noticed that some of the items on each level are stationary. This meant that I decided to write the guide in the same format as my Air Rescue guide. This was to explain the basics, but also mention how to beat each level.

Now that I have played this game even longer, I have noticed that the stationary items are only behind windows where people are waiting to be rescued. I am unsure whether I need to explain each level when the main strategy would be "focus on windows x and y". This information would be VERY useful to know in a guide, but it could also be considered as unneeded inflation of the guide.

Here are my options:

Option A

The guide is written as a basic guide, including the knowledge on how to play the game, how to get as many points as possible and general tactics to get through all the levels.

Option B

Including the information in Option A, this option would also include useful information about where to find important items.

I am thinking of doing Option A. The reason behind this is because I feel that the level-specific information is not really required and the guide would be completed quickly. I will mention any "first" item you find behind a windows where you had to rescue people will always appear whenever you play that level.

What do you guys think about this plan?

If the information is "very useful to know", I see no reason why it should be excluded. I'm sure we all have our own idea as to what does or does not constitute needless inflation of a guide, but to me, that wouldn't come close.

Thanks for that Games, saves me finishing my guide. May still do it some time in the future though, as it'd be more useful with images of each level, might be a possibility to have images for all 120 levels with the colaborative FAQ now? Haven't checked them out so dunno. I know you are limited to 100 images in normal FAQs, which was annoying, however with repeated levels I could have got away with it.

Seems this guide covers the levels reasonably adequately.

I've made a cool improvement to the page today.
Just go to any of the complete/incomplete lists pages and hover your mouse over the name of a game. Right now I only have images for the games with the letter A.
If you want to help (which is very appreciated as coding already took a lot of time) download the cover for a game, resize it to 400 pixels width or leave it if it is already below 400 pixels wide and rename it to {completionproject-ID}.jpg. If you have an account for the project page just hover over the button at the end of the game line where you can claim the game and look at the url. There the completionproject-ID is in it at the end (&id=##).
Then zip it and mail it to me.
Thanks a lot and happy holidays =)

Updating my progress on Megumi Rescue.

I have got the information for the controls written up onto my PC. I also some information on how to get through the game (not specific Actions) written down on paper. I also have some information about the items written somewhere, although I need to find it.

I have decided to get the guide onto this site (marked as complete, as that is what it is) without the action information so the guide can help people earlier. I will include the Action-specific information at a later date (when I actually discover what items are stationary and what items change position, and if my earlier research is accurate).

Megumi Resuce update

Currently going through the Actions, trying to find the best strategy for each Action. I have completed the first 6 Actions for the game. I still need to explain how to play the game/minigame, then explain how to obtain points (minus the items found in windows) and include introductions to some sections (including the Actions section).

Does anyone else have an update for any SMS game they are writing for, or is anyone planning to write for a SMS game anytime soon?

Megumi Rescue Update.

Couple of useful pieces of information found out this week. The first was that this game apparently has 30 actions instead of 60, cutting the time I thought I would be working on this project in half. The second was that you can only have a maximum of 8 extra lives in the game. Currently working on Action 8, but hoping to complete a couple more Actions by the end of tonight.

I did another one. Tecmo World Cup '93:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/sms/570214-tecmo-world-cup-93/faqs

Also there was a cancelled game for the SMS called Tecmo World Cup '92 but the site doesn't expect any FAQs for that game (which is understandable) so I think it should be removed from the stats of games that still need FAQs doing for them along with the other cancelled games on the list.

Thanks.
#388 | Glacoras | Posted 6/19/2012 10:23:06 AM | message detail | quote
@imperator171, there was a SMS CP that was cancelled before I came to this board. Any game that was covered during that project is not going to be added to this site unless the guides have been removed during the running of this version of the SMS project. I would also like to point out that I have THREE games I covered before this project started that are not listed on the website either.

If you look through the archive section, you will find all the topics relating to this version of the SMS CP. You will also see that we acknowledge the previous project, but our stats are based on what was covered when the current project was started on 12/10/2009.

In short, your guides for the previous project will not be added to the stats of the current project.

@tim_roast, this project also includes any cancelled games list in this site's database.

So, does anyone know the reason Tecmo World Cup '92 got cancelled? Was it simply that it was nearly 1993 so they decided to release it as Tecmo World Cup '93? In which case I can write a FAQ for it based on my 93 guide.
#392 | Ringworm | Posted 6/21/2012 9:33:22 AM | message detail | quote
Haven't played both games, so can't tell if they are the same or not, I am guessing they would probably be different if they are listed as separate games here. Maybe check on Wikipedia? No idea why it was cancelled.

I know the 92 version is available online if you want to check if they are the same, probably won't find it in cartridge/card format though.

Might want to post this here, for the people who don't read the news items:

Interesting Statistic Time: The project needs to complete 6 guides to have over 75% of all games covered on GameFAQs. We need 1 complete guide uploaded for 6 letters [E, N, U, X, Z and #]. We also need 6 complete guides for 1 letters [R]. What should we try and focus on?

Think I have worked out what my next FAQ will be, just got to get around to writing it (assuming I can finish the game). Not a fun one, but they have to get done at some stage.
