SMS FAQ Completion Project: Part 3

Ok, I had a look at the list of games on SMSpower at:
http://www.smspower.org/Games/SMS
And cross-referenced them to the gameFAQs list of SMS games.

These are all the possible games that could be added to the gameFAQs database by odino or others (but need to be investigated fully first of course):

* 45 Hap
* 4-in-1 M202
* 4-IN-1 M205
* Alibaba and 40 Thieves
* Block Hole
* Comic Bakery
* C_So! [MSX]
* Dr. HELLO
* E.I. – Exa Innova
* Galaxian
* Giem Moeumjip 188 Hap
* The Goonies
* Gun.Smoke
* Janggun-ui Adeul
* Jang Pung 2 (which appears on the compilation Piguwang 7 Hap so may have to be listed like Twin Mouse was despite only being on a compilation as far as I can tell)
* Jang Pung 3
* King & Balloon
* Knightmare II: The Maze of Galious
* The Micro Xevious
* Nemesis
* Piguwang 7 Hap (which is a compilation of the Korean dodgeball game, Jang Pung 2, 94 Super World Cup Soccer, Suho Jeonsa, Dinosaur Dooley, Flash Point)
* Pooyan
* Pro Yagu
* Puznic
* Puzzle (which is possibly Puznic)
* Sky Jaguar
* Super Bioman I
* Super Boy I
* Super Boy II
* Super Boy III
* Super Boy 4
* Super Drink
* Tank Battalion
* Xyzolog

Some of these do look dodgy though (like they could be just MSX games rather than definite releases for the SMS) whilst others look more genuine (e.g. Janggun-ui Adeul)

Other games on the SMSpower list were unreleased:
* The A-team
* Color & Switch Test
* Dinobasher – starring Bignose the Caveman
* The Excellent Dizzy Collection
* Game de check! Koutsuu Anzen
* Lethal Weapon 3
* NBA Jam
* M. System III Compact (this might be the hardware)
* Super Basketball

Again some of these are more dodgy than others (A-Team just has music for example, that could have come from anywhere).

So please add the genuine ones to the list now rather than drip-feed them through without telling anyone, so that we know what we are working with.

In addition to the obvious problem of pirate hacks (which also extends to at least one game already on the list--Wonsiin is an unabashed ripoff of The Adventures of Dino Riki for the NES), many of the games on the above list, despite being packaged and sold as SMS games, are actually SG-1000 games that use the SMS' backwards compatibility. This again extends to at least one game on the current list, Doksuri 5 Hyeongjae. I would argue that these games need to be put on the SG-1000 list instead.

See, you all wanted him to have his Internet back to cover a single game. He got the Internet back and has repaid us with more games.

Still, it's better to get the games added while there is a focus on this project and not in a couple of month's time when people have forgot about it. I just hope he doesn't add any cancelled games.

Thank you. I have seen real boxes for the games I added, rest looks more like unofficial MSX ports. I'm quite sure those games all have dumps too. SB (that's not my alt account) wouldn't accept "Canceled" without a link to a proto anyway. Even if you add all those listed above it's not like thaaaaat much extra work. Good thing no Korean text adventures exist.

p.s. I'm a she...play with me on White Knight Chronicles some time to get to know me :) It has voice chat too. (oops now I revealed I'm still online)

Thanks Rob. Can you help us sort through the list of games so that they are all correct (although that may be harder said than done unless you are from Korea). So for example Doksuri 5 Hyeongjae - how can we be sure that it is a SG-1000 game?

And what are the rules on hacked games? One of the games I covered already for the project - Flash Point - was an unlicensed version of a SEGA arcade game (although it was different but the idea was the same as was the name, so maybe this isn't defined as a hack?).

I wonder if Odino got them all this time or whether there are still games out there that aren't on gameFAQs yet? Maybe we should ask her?

I'll claim this one and try and do it this weekend.

Will be doing a news report tomorrow, but thought it should be mentioned that NA and JP games are now complete (once the site is corrected with the remaining "Game" SA compliations).

EDIT: Just noted that the "Game Box Serie Esportes" does not affect NA or JP completion stats.

Yes. Didn't want to advertise that was the final game just encase several people all flocked to it to try and be the person who "finished the NA games".

Think that Rygar finished off JP.

So Daffy Duck and the two Robocop games are all that are needed for Europe, then we just have the uncategorized SA and Korean stuff right? I'll have to check out the remaining games later, see if I can help, only played 4/12. Still on track to be done this month the rate it's going.

Any idea what the next project is? Think the consensus was between the Mega Drive/Genesis and N64 from memory.

The SMS has an SG-1000 "mode" that it enters when an SG-1000 game is played. This can be seen in Meka if you turn on the Tech Info window. Here's the list of games that I know of that were packaged as SMS games but were really SG-1000 games:

Alibaba and 40 Thieves
Block Hole
Bobble Bobble
C_So!
Comic Bakery
Dr. Hello
E.I.: Exa Innova
Eagles 5 (aka Doksuri 5 Hyeongjae)
FA Tetris
Flashpoint
Galaxian
Geim Moeumjip 188 Hap
Gun.Smoke
King & Balloon
The Micro Xevious
New Boggle Boggle 2
Pooyan
Power Boggle Boggle
Puznic
Sky Jaguar
Super Bioman 1
Super Boy I
Super Boy II
Super Bubble Bobble
The Three Dragon Story
Xyzolog

I would at least suggest taking a look at the Game Gear first considering the huge amount of ports between the two systems. But yeah, 12 games to do before we start thinking about that.

I think these final few games are going to take a while so there would still be time I reckon for you to get a guide done, especially if more games get added to the list like they did the other day. Plus if your guide is the last one remaining you'll have the pleasure of being the contributer who finished the project.

yeah, that's a nice thought, but not so noble if I let you all wait one year to finally finish the project. Let's see how many "new" games there are coming on, maybe I'll find a short one within them I want to tackle.

There may be no new games being listed for the SMS by what odino is saying above. So go ahead and pick one. If you think you are holding up the project at the end you could get a co-author on board to speed it along.

Mmm.... I might as well claim Taz in Escape from Mars and Ferias Frustradas do Pica Pau, since I already have 'em.

I won't probably get around to them until next week or the week after, though - it'll be after my GB CP claims (mostly golf games) and Mahjong Taisen for the NES if that gets back to smoothly going - so, if someone claims them in the meantime, you can remove my claim(s) from the site.

Well as I mentioned before, these last few games are proving to be harder to get through quickly - there's a reason they were left to the end, so you may have noticed that the prolific-ness has gone down recently. Therefore, and I know you want to, I believe there is still time for you to claim and then complete a guide for the project, helping us all out.

I thought the main reason was that odino (or someone else) had recently added them to the database. Although, with the few non-Korean games, they are generally quite terrible/long games to write for. Thankfully, someone has claimed all bu Robocop 3 now (again, excluding the Korean games in my post).

Probably. I was just talking from my experience of Daffy Duck in Hollywood which is taking longer than the previous games I've written for because it is a longer game.

fyi "Snail Maze" a built in game on the original model has no FAQ or page, although maps are hand drawn on main sms hardware page, a guide with actual screenshots with overlayed solution plus a section on intro/controls/faq would suffice

and "Dinobasher: Starring Bignose the Caveman" is missing one http://www.gamefaqs.com/704267 which I believe is a port of http://www.gamefaqs.com/921933 & http://www.gamefaqs.com/587135 although it's likely they are different enough to require a new guide

Damn, wish that people would not add Cancelled games to the site. I don't want to have the same situation as the NES project, where some games may never be completed due to them never being released in the first place.

@selmiak, should we add Snail Maze to the site as incomplete? It was never released outside of being in-built to the console itself, but the only decent guide is just the images (as pointed out in the previous post).

http://www.gamefaqs.com/sms/916382-sega-master-system/faqs/46789

As far as I'm concerned, the maps are quite good and good enough to cover the whole game, but the game should get its own page. But then the maps won't be a full circle guide, and this is what we are aiming for. But as long as it doesn't have it's own page I wouldn't add it to our list.

The Three Dragon Story seems like it'd be a pretty easy game to FAQ. It plays kinda like 1942, Xevious, Xenon 2 - you know, like a top-down scrolling shooter game. It lasts about five stages through a number of swarms, with a boss at the end of each level. You'll usually die in about six hits, though, so if you're going to write an FAQ for it, you might need an infinite health cheat.

I made one myself, so here's one - 00D02D:FF - 00D02D is the RAM address, and FF is the value, obviously.

I'm not saying I'm going to claim it (other priorities at the moment), but that'd be the biggest help. The game, as mentioned previously, is simple and short at five stages. I could also supply you with my game if you want.
